Winkle Cream

I'm not much into kibitzing, but I was watching this hand played by four very good players.

What do you think of the 2H bid? I don't like it. To make a bid, any bid, you need three things: (1) the suit, (2) the points, (3) a reason to bid. West has neither the suit nor the points to come into an auction where LHO has opened the bidding, partner has passed, and RHO has made a limit+ response. If the hearts are wrong, he could easily be going for a 4-digit number, even NV.

But the real missing element is the reason. What's the point of bidding? E-W games, or even part scores, are out of the question. 2H is hardly preemptive. A lead director? Not impossible, but that would come into play only if North became declarer, a heart was the right lead, AND it made the difference between making the game and not making it.

As it turned out, West didn't go for a number and the lead director issue was unimportant. So does that mean that the 2H bid was a no-op? Nope, because after the bidding comes the play.
