The 18 month break

About half-way through the first Colin Baker season, after "Revelation of the Daleks" the BBC cancelled Dr Who! The Controller of BBC1, a guy named Michael Grade who allegedly disliked Baker's performance, said that Dr Who had become excessively violent and the plots farcial during season 22 in 1985. When the head of a large company or a high-ranking politician makes a pronouncement like that it's difficult to gauge the truth content other than to say it usually ranges from pretty low down to absolute zero. Personally, I don't think the six stories in season 22 were any more violent or farcial than the 140 or so previous stories (actually I like "farcial") so I'm with the many Who-Nerds who think this was a personal matter.

The story then continues that the great unwashed mass of Dr Who Nerds rose up and complained to the BBC until they finally had to put the show back on 18 months later.
