In the two-part story "Silence in the Library" and "Forest of the Dead" the Doctor is called to a planet-sized library by a message on his "psychic paper" where he meets the sender of the message, Professor River Song. The fact that there are no living people on the planet is interesting, but the fact that Professor Song seems to have known the Doctor sometime in his future and her past is even more interesting. Professor Song backs up her claim that she will know the Doctor in the future by knowing his name and by having a sonic screwdriver that was given to her by the future Doctor.
The Professor and the Doctor clean up these little problems on the planet. and in the process, Professor Song is stored in the memory of the giant computer at the heart of the giant library. But don't worry, she'll be back.
Professor Song returns in "The Time of Angels" and "Flesh and Stone."Well, it's not exactly right that she "returns" since those two episodes took place thousands of years before the Library episodes happened. It's also not true that it was Professor Song who did the returning since she wasn't a professor yet so it was just River Song (But River was pleased to learn that she would someday become a Professor). The bad guys in these two episodes are the "Weeping Angels," maybe the scariest bad guys in Dr Who history, but The Doctor, Amy, and River prevail. Finally, a futuristic police ship arrives and takes River back to jail where she's accused of murdering a good person. Hmm, I guess we'll have to stay tuned, River Song will be back again.
Yes indeed, she returns yet again in "The Pandorica Opens," this time with the 11th Doctor, but changing doctor numbers and doctor faces doesn't seem to bother her. She uses an enviable piece of graffiti to contact the current Doctor. She goes to the oldest planet in the universe which has a cliff face of solid diamond on which is carved the oldest message in the universe which no one has ever been able to decypher; she replaces the message with "Hello, Sweetie," and then sends the doctor a psychic message to go there. Later, the doctor asks her how she could possibly destroy the oldest message in the universe just to write, "Hello, Sweetie" and River gives him what I thought was a very female answer, She says, "Well, you weren't answering your phone...!"
There are still a lot of unknowns about Professor Song. Perhaps we'll find some of the answers in the 2011 series.
