General Work History
- 2003-present. I'm now retired...but don't let that stop you. The kind of job that would interest me is one that has an aspect other than making money. That aspect could be an interesting technical problem -- perhaps something completely new -- or it could be working for an organization that advances a cause I can relate to.
- 1981-2003. Co-founder and President of Communications Programming Inc (CPI), a data processing consulting firm.
- 1971-1981. Prior to forming CPI in 1981, I worked as a systems analyst and project manager for First National Bank of Chicago.
- 1967 to 1971. In my first data processing job, I worked for IBM as a Programmer and Systems Analyst.
Data Processing Experience
- 1998-1999. We built a new "Daylight Overdraft Monitor" at BankOne. The new system implmented Federal Reserve Bank requirements dealing with bank insolvencies. The new system was PC-based although it monitored a Tandem system, and supported a multi-bank platform.
- 1997-1998. I was part of a group that helped evaluate the existing Parking Enforcement System for the City of Chicago. The study resulted in recommendations for changes to the vendor's system, City of Chicago systems, State of Illinois systems, city ordinances, and state statutes. The project included format changes to citations and notices, wheel tax and permit parking, booting and towing, contests and hearings, and the entire payment process.
- 1996-Present. Ongoing Web Page design and CGI programming.
- 1995-1997. We replaced a CICS-based Back Office System for the Capital Markets area of First Chicago with a UNIX-Sybase system and integrated the new system with existing UNIX Middle Office Systems.
- 1992-1994. We designed and developed EDIBANX for the Chicago Clearing House Association. EDIBANX is a UNIX-Raima EDI payment clearing system for U.S. banks. The system is written in 'C' and incorporates a database package from Raima Inc, an EDI translation package from Sterling Software, and communications software from Cleo.
- 1991. we assisted in converting American National Bank's Money Transfer and Fed Funds systems to new software packages.
- 1990. We developed a system to allow automatic fax transmissions of advices that were originally printed and mailed. Transmissions are automatic and the system is paperless.
- 1986-1989. We developed NETPAY, a system designed to transfer funds and
accompanying detailed information from payers to suppliers via banks. NETPAY
uses the ANSI X12 electronic data interchange standard, async-xmodem and bisync communications, and the DES encryption standards. It is written in 'C' and runs on either a PC LAN or a VAX.
- 1981-present. We developed interfaces from the First National Bank money transfer system to various in-house systems. The money transfer system is a Tandem product called 'BESS' written by Logica Data Architects. Interfaces were developed to: a Fed Funds system, a Fed Cap system, the bank's CIF, a customer interface system, the international payments system, the letters of credit system, and an older money transfer system. Communications to other Tandems used EXPAND and to IBM, VAX, or UNISYS hardware used Bisync. Coding was primarily TAL with some COBOL.
- 1977-1980. I helped develop a Corporate Message Switch for First National Bank. This was a Tandem based system that did protocol, line speed, and format conversion between different types of computers. It also switched between batch and transaction based systems and provided automatic store-and-forward facilities. Communications were EXPAND, bisync, and 3270. Written in TAL.
- 1974-1977. I wrote the communications front end for the First National Bank funds transfer system. This included bisynchronous lines, block mode terminals, teletype terminals, remote printers, and telex/TWX machines. It's important to note that at the time there were no existing packages or subroutines available for communications. The programs were completely interrupt driven, they wrote every required control character themselves, and processed 7 and 8 bit ASCII, EBCDIC, 6 bit transcode, and 5 level Baudot from the various devices.
- 1971-1974. I helped Write a Central Information File system for First National Bank. This was written in BAL on an IBM mainframe using IMS.
- 1967-1971. I worked on various maintenance and development activities involving the IBM Midwest Region sales system. Worked with 1401, 1410, and 360 systems.
